Painting

A collection of recent and current projects.

Spaces & Places

I decided it would be fun to do a couple paintings focused on backgrounds. Kitchen (left) is a painting of my kitchen. The most important thing about it is the light coming from the unseen window. Gas Station (right) is a painting of a gas station I passed on the highway driving through Indiana. Behind the gas station is a warehouse on fire. The most important thing about it is the blurriness to evoke the feeling of driving past without stopping.

Plants

I was invited to participate in a charity arts project for the Northern Lakes Art Association highlighting local plants. Each artist was assigned two plants that will be turned into a deck of playing cards. The original works will be on exhibition at the State Theater in Ely, Minnesota from July 17th – July 30th. More about each piece to follow.

Title. Multiplier

Multiplier is a one of the two paintings I made for the NLAA project. It features the Iris Versicolor, which is known to multiply very quickly.

It was important to me to keep these pieces simple and graphic, since they will ultimately be rendered on the small surface of a playing card.

Title. Parasite

Parasite is the second of the two paintings I made for the NLAA project. It features the Geocaulon Lividum, a parasitic plant.

This piece was an interesting challenge because I wanted to paint it softly enough that it wouldn’t be too disturbing to look at.

Title. Dog Bite

Dog Bite is my favorite of the three, but I thought it was a little too gross maybe for a deck of unsuspecting charity playing cards.

It features Apocynum, colloquially called dogbane. I selected it to compliment this particular piece after a friend sent me a reference photo of a dog bite.

Ordinary Horrors

My current trajectory of work emphasizes my concept of ‘ordinary horror.’ These ordinary horrors are the little things we experience all the time: when your gums bleed when you floss your teeth, when you get a cold sore right before a big presentation, ordinary things. This work is a new medium for me, all done digitally, but to emulate my painterly style when using ‘real’ paint. So far they are all self-portraits since not too many people volunteer to be your cold sore muse.

Commissions and Purchased Work Policy
If you’re interested in purchasing a print of a painting on this page, you can email me at gravitydriveanalytics@gmail.com. I am not presently broadly open for commissions, but am interested in subject matter that aligns with my Ordinary Horror concept. I’m always interested in charity projects! No pet portraits please!
